How to Hotspot VPN Connection on Windows

Setting up a Hotspot with a VPN connection on Windows allows you to share your VPN-protected internet connection with other devices. Below are steps to create a Hotspot with a VPN connection on a Windows PC:

Prerequisites:

  1. VPN Subscription:
    • Ensure that you have a valid VPN subscription. Download and install the VPN client software on your Windows PC.
  2. Wireless Network Adapter:
    • Your PC must have a wireless network adapter to create a hotspot.

Steps:

  1. Connect to VPN:
    • Open the VPN client on your Windows PC and connect to the desired VPN server.
  2. Access Network and Sharing Center:
    • Right-click on the network icon in your system tray (usually located in the lower-right corner of your screen) and select “Open Network & Internet settings.”
  3. Access Network and Sharing Center:
    • In the Network & Internet settings, click on “Change adapter options” to open the Network Connections window.
  4. Access Adapter Properties:
    • Locate your VPN connection in the Network Connections window. Right-click on it and select “Properties.”
  5. Share VPN Connection:
    • In the Properties window, go to the “Sharing” tab.
  6. Enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS):
    • Check the box that says “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection.”
  7. Select Virtual Wi-Fi Adapter:
    • In the drop-down menu, choose the virtual Wi-Fi adapter that you will use to broadcast the hotspot. This adapter is typically named “Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter.”
  8. Configure Hotspot:
    • Open the Command Prompt as an administrator. Type the following command to set up the hotspot:
      bash
      netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=YourHotspotName key=YourPassword
      • Replace “YourHotspotName” with your desired hotspot name.
      • Replace “YourPassword” with your preferred password.
  9. Start Hotspot:
    • Type the following command to start the hosted network:
      bash
      netsh wlan start hostednetwork
  10. Enable Hotspot:
    • Go back to the Network & Internet settings and select “Mobile hotspot” from the left sidebar. Turn on the Mobile hotspot toggle switch.
  11. Connect Other Devices:
    • On other devices, search for available Wi-Fi networks, and you should see the hotspot you created. Connect to it using the password you specified.

Notes:

  • Stopping the Hotspot:
    • To stop the hotspot, use the command:
      bash
      netsh wlan stop hostednetwork
  • Automatically Start Hotspot with Windows:
    • You can configure your PC to start the hosted network automatically. In the Command Prompt with administrator privileges, type:
      bash
      netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=YourHotspotName key=YourPassword

      Followed by:

      bash
      netsh wlan start hostednetwork
  • Security Considerations:
    • Ensure your hotspot has a strong password.
    • Be aware that some VPN providers may not support sharing your VPN connection via a hotspot.

By following these steps, you can create a hotspot with a VPN connection on your Windows PC and share the secure, VPN-protected internet connection with other devices.
